Chandigarh is a Union Territory of India and one of the country’s most well-planned urban centers. It was developed after Independence to serve as the new capital of Punjab and is internationally known for its modern urban design by Le Corbusier. Chandigarh was formally constituted as a Union Territory on 1 November 1966 under the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966, and it continues to serve as the shared capital of both Punjab and Haryana.

According to the Census of India 2011, Chandigarh had a total population of 1,055,450. Under the 2011 Census administrative structure, the Union Territory had:

  • Total Districts: 1
  • Total Sub-districts (Tehsils): 1
  • Total Community Development Blocks: 1
  • Total Villages: 24

These administrative divisions are important for preparing and using SOI shapefiles, especially for district, sub-district, and village-level GIS work. Chandigarh is widely used in geospatial analysis for studies related to urban planning, land use mapping, infrastructure analysis, transport networks, population distribution, and municipal-level spatial studies. Since Chandigarh is a highly urbanized and planned administrative unit, accurate boundary shapefiles are particularly useful for urban GIS applications, census mapping, and institutional planning.

You can download shapefile for the state boundary, district boundaries, and sub-district boundaries for the state.

NOTE: There is no separate sub divisions in Chandigarh Union Territory.
