Mizoram is a mountainous state in northeastern India, known for its steep hill ranges, rich forest cover, unique tribal cultural heritage, and strategic international borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh. The region was earlier administered as the Lushai Hills district of Assam, later became a Union Territory on 21 January 1972, and finally attained full statehood on 20 February 1987.
According to the Census of India 2011, Mizoram had a total population of 1,097,206. Under the 2011 Census administrative structure, the state had:
- Total Districts: 8
- Total Sub-districts (Tehsils): 22
- Total Community Development Blocks: 26
- Total Villages: 830
These administrative divisions are important for preparing and using SOI shapefiles, especially for district, tehsil, and village-level GIS work.

- Extract the Contents: Unzip the downloaded file. Inside, you’ll find multiple files with extensions like
.shp,.shx,.dbf, etc. All these files make up a shapefile dataset. - Import into GIS Software: Open your preferred GIS software (such as QGIS or ArcGIS). Use the “Add Vector Layer” tool, and select the
.shpfile. - Start Mapping: Now you’re ready to visualize and analyze India’s administrative boundaries!
