Gujarat is one of the most economically significant and geographically diverse states in western India, known for its long coastline, semi-arid plains, fertile agricultural tracts, industrial growth, forested hills, and rich historical and cultural heritage. The modern state of Gujarat was formed on 1 May 1960 after the bifurcation of the former Bombay State on linguistic basis.

According to the Census of India 2011, Gujarat had a total population of 60,439,692. Under the 2011 Census administrative structure, the state had:

• Total Districts: 26
• Total Sub-districts (Tehsils): 225
• Total Community Development Blocks: 225
• Total Villages: 18,403
• Total Urban Areas: 195

These administrative divisions are important for preparing and using SOI shapefiles, especially for district, tehsil, and village-level GIS work.
