Bihar is one of the most historically significant states in eastern India, known for its rich cultural heritage, fertile Gangetic plains, dense rural settlement pattern, and major contribution to India’s agrarian economy. The modern province of Bihar was formally created on 22 March 1912 when it was separated from the Bengal Presidency. Later, after Independence and administrative restructuring, Bihar continued as an important state in eastern India.

According to the Census of India 2011, Bihar had a total population of 104,099,452. Under the 2011 Census administrative structure, the state had:

• Total Districts: 38
• Total Sub-districts (Tehsils): 101
• Total Community Development Blocks: 534
• Total Villages: 44,874
