Sikkim is a small but strategically important Himalayan state in northeastern India, known for its rugged mountain terrain, rich biodiversity, glacial systems, and unique cultural landscape. Formerly a monarchy, Sikkim became the 22nd state of India on 16 May 1975 following a referendum and subsequent constitutional amendment.

According to the Census of India 2011, Sikkim had a total population of 610,577, making it one of the least populous states in India. Under the 2011 Census administrative structure, the state had:

  • Total Districts: 4
  • Total Sub-districts (Tehsils): 9
  • Total Community Development Blocks: 9
  • Total Villages: 451

These administrative divisions are important for preparing and using SOI shapefiles, especially for district, tehsil, and village-level GIS work.

You can download shapefile for the state boundary, district boundaries, and sub-district boundaries for the state.
