West Bengal is one of the most historically and geographically significant states in eastern India, known for its fertile alluvial plains, Himalayan foothills, deltaic landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and major river systems. The modern state of West Bengal was formed on 26 January 1950, although its present territorial identity emerged after the Partition of Bengal in 1947.

According to the Census of India 2011, West Bengal had a total population of 91,276,115. Under the 2011 Census administrative structure, the state had:

• Total Districts: 19
• Total Sub-districts (Tehsils): 360
• Total Community Development Blocks: 360
• Total Villages: 40,895

These administrative divisions are important for preparing and using SOI shapefiles, especially for district, tehsil, and village-level GIS work.
