Bengaluru, officially known as Bangalore, is one of India’s largest metropolitan cities and is governed by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the municipal corporation responsible for urban governance and civic administration. The BBMP was formed in 2007 by merging the erstwhile Bangalore Mahanagara Palike with surrounding municipal councils and villages, significantly expanding the city’s administrative extent.

The BBMP jurisdiction covers a large urban area of approximately 709 sq. km, making it one of the largest municipal corporations in India. As per the Census of India 2011, the BBMP area had a population of around 8.49 million (84.9 lakh). For administrative purposes, the city was divided into 198 wards across multiple zones, each serving as the basic unit for governance and urban planning
