Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh, is administered by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC), the primary urban local body responsible for civic infrastructure and governance. The origins of municipal governance in Bhopal date back to 1907, when the first municipal body, Majlis-e-intezamia, was established. Over time, the system evolved, and in 1983, Bhopal was officially upgraded to a Municipal Corporation, marking a significant milestone in its urban administrative development.

The Bhopal Municipal Corporation today governs a large urban area of approximately 463 sq. km, making it one of the major municipal jurisdictions in central India. The city is administratively divided into 85 wards across multiple zones, each represented by an elected councillor for local governance.

According to the Census of India 2011, the municipal area of Bhopal had a population of around 19.2 lakh (1,922,130), reflecting its status as a rapidly growing urban center.
