Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, is governed by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), one of the oldest municipal bodies in the world, established in 1688 as the Corporation of Madras. It is the oldest municipal corporation in India and continues to play a vital role in urban governance and planning.
The modern jurisdiction of the corporation was significantly expanded in 2011, when several surrounding municipalities and town panchayats were merged, increasing its administrative extent to about 426 sq. km. The city is currently divided into 200 wards across multiple zones, each represented by an elected councillor, forming the core unit of local governance.
According to the Census of India 2011, the population within the Chennai municipal corporation area was approximately 66.7 lakh (6.67 million), reflecting its status as one of India’s major metropolitan centers.
