Coimbatore, one of the major industrial and urban centers of Tamil Nadu, is governed by the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC), which is responsible for urban planning, infrastructure, and civic services. The city’s municipal administration dates back to 1866, when it was first established as a municipality under the Town Improvements Act. It was later upgraded to a Municipal Corporation in 1981, marking its growth as a major urban center in southern India.
The Coimbatore Municipal Corporation currently covers an area of approximately 415 sq. km, making it one of the largest urban local bodies in Tamil Nadu. The city is administratively divided into 100 wards across multiple zones, which serve as the basic units for governance and service delivery.
According to the Census of India 2011, Coimbatore had a municipal population of around 10.5 lakh (1,050,721), reflecting its importance as a rapidly growing industrial and commercial hub.
