Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal, is administered by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), one of the oldest urban local bodies in India. The origins of municipal governance in Kolkata date back to 1876, when the Calcutta Municipal Corporation was formally established. Over time, it evolved into the present-day KMC, which plays a crucial role in urban planning, infrastructure development, and civic administration.
The jurisdiction of KMC covers an area of approximately 206 sq. km, making it one of the most densely populated metropolitan regions in India. The city is administratively divided into 144 wards, grouped into boroughs, which serve as the primary units for local governance and service delivery.
According to the Census of India 2011, Kolkata Municipal Corporation had a population of around 44.5 lakh (4,496,694), reflecting its status as a major cultural, economic, and historical center of eastern India.
