Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra, is governed by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), also known as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Established in 1888 under the Bombay Municipal Corporation Act, it is one of the oldest and richest municipal corporations in India, responsible for urban governance, infrastructure, and civic services in the city.
The MCGM jurisdiction covers an area of approximately 603 sq. km, encompassing Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban districts. The city is administratively divided into 227 wards, which are further grouped into administrative zones, forming the foundation for local governance and service delivery.
According to the Census of India 2011, the population under the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai was approximately 1.24 crore (12,442,373), making it the most populous municipal corporation in India.
