Understanding the PIN Code Structure

India uses a six-digit Postal Index Number (PIN) system to sort and deliver mail. Each of the six digits in an Indian postal code has a specific geographical meaning:

  • First Digit: Indicates the major postal region or zone (numbers 1 through 8 for regions, and 9 for the Army Postal Service).
  • First Two Digits: Together, they identify the specific postal circle or sub-region (e.g., 56 to 59 for Karnataka).
  • Third Digit: Represents the sorting district headquartered at the main post office of the region.
  • Last Three Digits: Designate the specific delivery post office or head office serving that exact area.
