Delhi, officially known as the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, is the capital territory of India and one of the country’s most important administrative, political, economic, and urban regions. Delhi has a long historical legacy as a center of power and settlement, and in its modern administrative form, it became a Union Territory in 1956 and later the National Capital Territory of Delhi in 1991 under the 69th Constitutional Amendment.
According to the Census of India 2011, Delhi had a total population of 16,787,941. Under the 2011 Census administrative structure, the territory had:
- Total Districts: 9
- Total Sub-districts (Tehsils): 27
- Total Community Development Blocks: 9
- Total Villages: 165
These administrative divisions are important for preparing and using SOI shapefiles, especially for district, tehsil, and village-level GIS work. Delhi is widely used in geospatial analysis for studies related to urban expansion, land use and land cover, infrastructure planning, transportation networks, population distribution, municipal governance, environmental assessment, and urban remote sensing. Since Delhi is one of India’s most densely populated and spatially complex territories, accurate administrative boundary shapefiles are especially useful for urban GIS, census mapping, and planning-related applications.
