Odisha is an important state in eastern India, known for its coastal plains, river deltas, forested uplands, tribal regions, mineral resources, and rich cultural heritage. The modern province of Odisha was formed on 1 April 1936 as a separate province, and this date is widely recognized as the foundation day of the state. Odisha is especially significant in studies related to coastal geography, disaster management, tribal development, watershed analysis, agriculture, mining, and regional planning.

According to the Census of India 2011, Odisha had a total population of 41,974,218. Under the 2011 Census administrative, the state had:

• Total Sub-districts (Tehsils): 477
• Total Community Development Blocks: 477
• Total Villages: 51,442
• Total Urban Areas: 107
